About This Place

Cornbred Barbecue in Ames, Iowa, delivers an exceptional take on classic American barbecue with a distinct personality that sets it apart from the typical smokehouse. Nestled at 526 Main St #106, this vibrant spot balances hearty, comforting dishes with unexpected bursts of flavor and texture, making it a must-visit for barbecue enthusiasts and casual diners alike.

The cuisine is unapologetically Southern-inspired, featuring a menu brimming with rich, smoky meats and inventive sides. Cornbred's burnt ends—a beloved highlight—arrive tender and richly flavored, perfectly complemented by tangy pickled red onions that cut through the deep-smoke profile. The Hallelujah Mashed Potatoes accompany these beautifully, their creamy, buttery texture acting as the perfect canvas for the robust brisket.

Other standout dishes include the pulled pork, renowned for its smoky sweetness and succulence; the sticky ribs that boast a glossy, finger-licking glaze; and the brisket chili, a hearty, flavor-packed bowl that warms the soul. The brisket sandwich and brisket-n-biscuit options showcase the meat’s versatility, delivering satisfying, tender bites whether eaten handheld or plated. Not to be missed are the Pig Candy strips—a sweet and smoky treat—and the skillet mac, which takes the classic mac & cheese to new heights with its four-cheese sauce, toasted breadcrumbs, and fresh chives, creating a gooey, crunchy delight in every forkful.

The ensemble of sides is equally compelling and diverse. The barbecue-savvy can’t help but savor the baked beans with their sweet-smoky notes, the crisp pineapple coleslaw that offers a refreshing tropical twist, and the Tex-Mex poutine that layers complexity with melted cheese, gravy, and fries. For those seeking a lighter option, the Country Fields salad, featuring baby kale, arugula, and frisée tossed in a honey lemon vinaigrette with Maytag bleu, blackberries, and spiced almonds, provides a fresh and tangy counterpoint to the rich mains.

Dessert lovers will find joy in the humongous cinnamon roll, a highlight praised as pure bliss for cinnamon roll aficionados, often paired perfectly with a loaded Bloody Mary during their lively Sunday brunch. The Fruity Pebble Crispy Treats add a nostalgic and playful finish to the meal, and the root beer ice cream floatie combines homemade vanilla bean custard with Peace Tree Root Beer for a creamy, effervescent delight.

The dining atmosphere at Cornbred Barbecue is informal yet warm, with a bustling energy that feels friendly and genuine. The patio seating offers an especially memorable touch—diners often mention the relaxing charm of watching nearby trains meander by, which adds a touch of quaint local character to the experience. The staff’s enthusiasm for the food is contagious, and while the kitchen can get busy (expect waits especially at brunch), real patrons agree it’s worth every minute.

Reviews underscore Cornbred’s ability to deliver both flavor and hospitality. Guests like Dougie Noneya rave over the wings and fresh salads, while others highlight the ribs, turkey, and pulled pork as standout proteins. Some have noted minor variations, such as the brisket occasionally leaning greasier or the pineapple coleslaw’s mild profile, but these subtle critiques are far outweighed by the overall warmth, quality, and inventive house recipes that make Cornbred a local favorite.

Whether indulging in beloved barbecue classics or savoring the unique twists like the tangy mustard bottle and the ever-popular cornbread pudding, Cornbred Barbecue offers a dining experience rich in flavor and spirit. It’s more than a meal—it’s a celebration of Iowa’s barbecue scene with heart, soul, and plenty of smoke.

Street corn was not great IMO.. Wings (flappers) were absolutely AMAZING!! Wife had the salad and street corn. Loved the salad! Same reaction on the corn. She also got the brown sugar lemonade and LOVED that! Kid got the Mac and cheese skillet and said it was good but wasn't a fan of the extra extra cheese. As apps we had the cornbread pudding, candy bacon strips, and mini cornbread muffins. All of those were super good! Candy bacon is a 10/10!! Service and atmosphere felt top notch for a BBQ place or restaurant in general! Casual dinning, date night, or family event.. all recommend!! Overall first time we have been there but not the last!

Pretty good BBQ for Iowa. Brisket was subpar, turkey was good, ribs were good, pulled pork was ok, sausage was good. Brisket Dip was good. Cocktail was very nice. Would return

We went for Sunday brunch. There was a bit of a wait (40 minutes), but we had a group of six. They do not do reservations. I will say the wait was definitely worth it! Pictured is the cinnamon roll appetizer with candied bacon and a Loaded Bloody Mary

Good barbecue, but the brisket dip was very greasy when picked up. Don’t know if they’re always that greasy, but it was excessive. I also wasn’t expecting the cornbread pudding to have a bit of heat to it. Beans were excellent! Pineapple coleslaw was a bit bland. Pork ribs were good. Loved sitting on the patio and watching the trains go by!

Absolutely fantastic BBQ and all the sides. We did a family style platter of brisket, pork shoulder, burnt ends, and a half rack. The brisket and pork were superior BBQ. The ribs were great. The burnt ends were all meat, no fat, needed the pickled onion, and that made it great. The Gigantoroll is a cinnamon roll lovers heaven. If you like cinnamon rolls, than this is a must. The cornbread pudding is simply the most moint cornbread in existence. Big yes on this.

Holy buckets this place has great food!! We had the hushpuppies, the three little pigs, the hamburger, and the bread pudding - my belly is so full and my heart is so happy!! Great atmosphere, and our server was so nice! The food was worth the short wait to order. 10/10 would eat here again!!

Fantastic place, extremely service and hospitality focused. Every person we interacted with was so friendly, genuinely happy we were there. Stopped on a Saturday around 530 for dinner and ordered a variety of options to share. Our server was attentive and quick, loved the water refills without asking and overall excellent service. We had the smoked beef rib which is a Saturday special and I don't possess the language to describe how amazing it was! Pig candy (candied bacon) was probably the best we've ever had. Burnt ends, skillet mac, ribs, pickled red onions(!), absolutely delicious. The BBQ sauces were great, I liked the pepper vinegar and mustard especially! Clean restaurant, nice restrooms and awesome atmosphere to boot. Absolute must stop here!

Stopped in here for brunch while visiting family in Ames and it was great! Service was very quick for Sunday brunch, and the food was solid. Lots of good options to choose from, I went with the Huevos Rancheros and really enjoyed it. Generous portion sizes so come with an appetite for sure, would absolutely come back if we’re ever in town again!
